Magic Flute to be restaged at Opera House

HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Mozart’s mostfamous opera The Magic Flute will be restaged at the Ho Chi MinhCity Opera House on June 9 and 10.

The two-act opera is a production of the HCMCity Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) in collaboration with theGoethe Institute in Vietnam.

The Magic Flute tells the love story of Prince Tamino andPamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night. After Pamina is held in captivityunder the high priest Sarastro, the Queen of the Night persuades Tamino torescue his daughter.

The opera premiered in 1791 in Vienna, and hasbeen staged by hundreds of theatre companies in the world, such as TheMetropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

With the support of Norway’s TranspositionProgramme, HBSO introduced the concert version of The Magic Flute inHCM City in 2013.

A year later, French-German director DavidHerman helped the troupe improve all aspects of the work, from music, dance andacting to costumes and stage design.

Famous Vietnamese designer Quynh Paris, who haspresented collections at fashion weeks in Vietnam, New York and Los Angeles,designed the costumes for the opera and gifted them to HBSO.

The play was choreographed by HBSOchoreographers Nguyen Phuc Hai and Nguyen Phuc Hung. The opera waswell-received by critics and audiences.

In 2016, thanks to the support of the GoetheInstitute, vocal master Askan Siegfried Geisler and language coaches CorneliaSchwind and Doan Hai Vu offered training to HBSO artists to perform theopera in its original language of German.

This year, two languagecoaches Laura Lehnert Nguyen and Thanh - Nha Claudia from Germany willtrain the actors.

The opera will be performed in German withVietnamese dialogues, featuring Pham Khanh Ngoc as Queen of the Night and PhamTrang as Prince Tamino.

Sopranos Pham Duyen Huyen and Vo Thuy Ngoc Tuyenwill play Pamina in the first and second performance.

The multi-lingual singer Derek Anthony, founderof the Music & Drama Institute in Hong Kong, will play Sarastro.

Conductor Tran Nhat Minh, a graduate of theMoscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, will be the choir master.

The opera will begin at 8pm at the Opera Houseat 7 Lam Son Square in District 1. Tickets are available at the venue.-VNS/VNA

Over 100 burials from 4000 years ago discovered in Hanoi

Archaeologists from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, the Hanoi Museum and the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities have announced the discovery of over 70 graves from the pre-Dong Son period and 40 graves from Dong Son period at the Vuon Chuoi archaeological relic in Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district.

Festival promotes Vietnam-RoK cultural exchange

Hanoi Ao dai dance marks Vietnamese women’s day
