Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem was eliminated from the FIDE WorldCup in the town of Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, after losing to defending champion LevonAronian of Armenia in a tie-break.
After two draws instandard matches of the fourth round, the two grandmasters competed in afour-match tie-break which saw a final result of 3.5-2.5 for Aronian,world No 14.
Previously, theVietnamese player was also ousted in this round in 2013 as well.
With his results in the tournament, Liem bagged 25,000 USD, while Aronian advanced to the quarter-final where he will playGM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France who is world No 5.
The FIDE World Cup willwrap-up on October 4 with the finalists qualifying for the CandidatesTournament for the World Chess Championship 2020.
The total prize fund is1.6 million USD, with the winner taking away 110,000 USD./.
