Vietnamese chess masters seek Asian team titles

The Vietnam Chess Federation has sent its best players to Tabriz, Iran, for the 18th Asian Nations Cup, where Asian chess masters are competing for team standard, blitz and rapid titles from May 20–30, the Nhan Dan (People) online newspaper reported.

Le Quang Liem, Nguyen NgocTruong Son, Dao Thien Hai, Nguyen Duc Hoa and Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy arecompeting in the round-robin Open section against players from China,India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Oman.

NguyenThi Mai Hung, Hoang Thi Nhu Y, Hoang Thi Bao Tram, Luong Phuong Hanhand Nguyen Thi Thanh An have joined other opponents from China, India,Iran A, Iran B and Kazakhstan in the Women’s section, played under around robin format with semifinal and final matches.

Vietnamese competitors have made the podium four times at this event, all of which in the Open category.

Vietnam ranked second at the 14th (2005) and 16th editions (2009), and finished third at the 15th (2008) and 17th (2012) events.

Aheadof their departure for Iran, Vietnamese players experienced a warm-upat the 2014 National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships from May 12–16,in which Quang Liem and Truong Son claimed the blitz and rapid titlesrespectively.

The national team will continue their trainingfollowing their Iranian campaign, before heading to Norway for one ofthe world’s largest chess events, the 2014 Chess Olympiad, taking placein Tromso from August 1-14.-VNA

Over 100 burials from 4000 years ago discovered in Hanoi

Archaeologists from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, the Hanoi Museum and the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities have announced the discovery of over 70 graves from the pre-Dong Son period and 40 graves from Dong Son period at the Vuon Chuoi archaeological relic in Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district.

Festival promotes Vietnam-RoK cultural exchange

A cultural festival has been held in Uijeongbu city of the Republic of Korea (RoK)'s Gyeonggi province to mark the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Association (VWA) in the country.

Hanoi Ao dai dance marks Vietnamese women’s day

More than 70,000 women from across the capital city of Hanoi dressed up in Ao dai (traditional long dress) and participated in a folk dance ensemble on October 20 to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hanoi and the 94th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Union.

Vietnam attends UNESCO Executive Board’s 220th session in France
