Hanoi (VNA) – People’s trust, concensus and a sense of citizens’ responsibility, along with the whole political system’s active engagement are the determinants of the general election’s success, National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairperson Tong Thi Phong said on July 20.
At the opening plenum of the 14th parliament’s first session in Hanoi, Phong, who is also Standing Vice Chairwoman of the National Election Council, delivered a report about the May 22 election of deputies to the 14th NA and all-level People’s Councils for the 2016 – 2021 tenure.
She described the leadership of the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the NA’s Party delegation and all-level Party committees as the top factor in the electoral success.
The close coordination among relevant agencies, communications conducted in various forms, the transparency, democracy and fairness ensured before and during the elections, along with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and its member organisations’encouraging people to vote, raised citizens’ sense of responsibility towards the building of the State apparatus and local administrations, she noted.
The official also attributed the electoral success to the good job of personnel preparations, electioneering and poll worker training. Carefully prepared security plans, the sound settlement of election-related complaints and denunciations, and the close watch kept throughout the election also contributed to the success.
Reporting the outcomes of the verification of NA deputies’ eligibility, NA Vice Chairman Phung Quoc Hien said the National Election Council confirmed the eligibility of 494 out of the 496 NA deputies-elect.
Trinh Xuan Thanh and Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong, respectively elected to represent Hau Giang province and Hanoi at the 14th NA, failed to meet the standards of an NA deputy. Huong also personally submitted a request not to assume the position, Hien added.-VNA
