Hanoi (VNA) – The National Election Council (NEC) convened its eighth session, an unwonted one, in Hanoi on July 17, under the chair of National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, head of the council.

The council carefully considered and voted on the eligibility of 494 deputies of the 14th National Assembly.

It also conducted a ballot to disapprove the eligibility of elected deputy Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong, a deputy of the 13th National Assembly.

The results revealed that all council members agreed to verify the eligibility of the 494 deputies of the 14th National Assembly and reject the eligibility of Huong as she failed to be qualified for the post and personally submitted a request to leave.

At its seventh session, or its last plenary meeting, on July 15, the council conducted a ballot to verify the eligibility of elected deputy Trinh Xuan Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hau Giang province in the 2011-2016 tenure. All members of the council present at the meeting agreed to not recognise his NA deputy status because of his looming violations.

The general election, which took place on May 22, selected 496 deputies to the new legislature.

According to the Law on Election of National Assembly Deputies and People’s Council Members, the NEC verifies the eligibility of all newly-elected deputies and grants certificates recognising their status as deputies of the 14th NA.-VNA
