Hanoi (VNA) – There has been no report on Vietnamese killed in an assault in Burkina Faso on January 15 (local time), said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Le Hai Binh one day after the attack.

He said his ministry has requested the Vietnamese Embassy in Morocco and Burkina Faso to promptly contact competent local agencies to learn more about the incident and whether there have been Vietnamese nationals affected by the assault.

The embassy was also asked to continue keeping a close watch on the incident while taking urgent measures to support and ensure safety for Vietnamese citizens in the West African nation, he said.

Answering reporters’ queries on Vietnam’s response to the attack, Binh said Vietnam is concerned about and vehemently condemns recent consecutive terrorist attacks, with the latest in Burkina Faso on January 15, leaving many dead and injured.

“We would like to share in the losses with families of the deceased in the assault and strongly believe that attackers will be punished appropriately,” the spokesman said.

The attackers raided a luxury hotel in Burkina Faso on late January 15, shooting some and taking others hostage in a siege that lasted hours and ended with at least 28 people dead.

On January 14, seven explosions rang out near Sarinah shopping mall in downtown Jakarta, Indonesia, while a shootout between the attackers and police occurred in front of the mall.

The blasts came after the Islamic State issued a warning of carrying out attacks in Jakarta, national police spokesman Anton Charliyan told the press at the scene.

At least seven people were killed and 20 others were injured in the attacks, according to Jakarta police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal.-VNA
