Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian authorities made public the identity of one of the five terrorists killed in the January 14 attacks in downtown Jakarta, that claimed seven lives.
The attacks in Sarinah shopping mall killed an Indonesian and an Algerian-Canadian, besides the five terrorists.
National Police Chief Inspector Gen. Badrodin Haiti told the media that the attacker was identified as Afif, alias Sunakim, who was once trained in a paramilitary camp in Indonesia in 2010.
According to the officer, Afif was believed to be recruited by Muhammad Bahrun Naim, a founding member of Katibah Nusantara - branch in Southeast Asia of the so-called Islamic State.
The police also found funding the attacks in Jakarta was channeled through Naim.
If confirmed to be the work of Katibah Nusantara, which is made up primarily of Malay-speaking Indonesians and Malaysians, it would mark the first violence in Southeast Asia by the group.
Gen. Badrodin Haiti said the police have identified four attackers but did not mention the identity of the other three.
On November 15, President Joko Widodo briefly visited the scene of the deadly attack and said the situation was brought under control.
On the same day, Singaporean Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said the country will increase the exchange of intelligence with Indonesia to fight terrorism. He plans to discuss with his Indonesian counterpart cooperation in this field during a visit to Indonesia next month.
