HCM City Ballet present Autumn Melody Concert

The concert will include three eveningperformances featuring dozens of singers, musicians and dancers whoon Aug. 17 will perform popular foreign and Vietnamese pieces.

The's opening show will feature Dido and Aeneas, a famous opera by theEnglish Baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate.

Sopranos Cho Hae-ryong and Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga, and tenor Pham Trang will sing with the support of the chorus and ballet.

Dido and Aeneas recounts the love story of Dido, queen of Carthage(played by Cho), and the Trojan hero Aeneas (played by Trang), and herdespair at his abandonment of her.

Guest conductor,Norwegian Lars notto Birkeland, and his colleagues, harpsichordistChristian Kjos and cellist Jaroslav Havel, will participate in theperformance.

Dancers Nguyen Thu Trang, Ho Phi Diep, NguyenLuong Hoa, Dao Van Thien and Pham The Chung will be featured duringAug. 18's show in the one-act ballet Carmen Suite written in 1967 byRussian composer Rodion Shchedrin, choreographed by Alberto Alonso.

Modern Ballet Dream Puzzles, a contemporary dance choreographed byyoung talents Phuc Hung and Phuc Hai, will continue the night.

The work highlights music by Vu Viet Anh and Nguyen Manh Duy Linh, two of the orchestra's youngest talents.

Pieces by composers Philip Glass, Michael Nyman and Max Richter will also be featured.

During the last show on aug. 19, chamber music by Vietnamese composersNguyen Van Thuong and Hoang Cuong will be featured. Thuong's Tro Ve DatMe (Return to the Motherland) will open the night.

Violinist Hoang Linh Chi and her husband, Spanish oboeist Pau Rodriguez,will perform together in Concerto for Violin, Oboe and StringOrchestra. The work combines Vietnamese and Spanish tastes by herfather, composer - music professor Cuong, former director of the HCMCity Music Conservatory.

The evening will also featureexcerpts from the soundtracks of the films Titanic, Blue Tango, theGodfather, James Bond and The Pirates of the Caribbean .

The orchestra invited special guests from Japan , the Republic of Korea and France to participate in the performance.-VNA

Over 100 burials from 4000 years ago discovered in Hanoi

Archaeologists from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, the Hanoi Museum and the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities have announced the discovery of over 70 graves from the pre-Dong Son period and 40 graves from Dong Son period at the Vuon Chuoi archaeological relic in Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district.

Festival promotes Vietnam-RoK cultural exchange

A cultural festival has been held in Uijeongbu city of the Republic of Korea (RoK)'s Gyeonggi province to mark the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Association (VWA) in the country.

Hanoi Ao dai dance marks Vietnamese women’s day

More than 70,000 women from across the capital city of Hanoi dressed up in Ao dai (traditional long dress) and participated in a folk dance ensemble on October 20 to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hanoi and the 94th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Union.

Vietnam attends UNESCO Executive Board’s 220th session in France
