Fatalities in Typhoon Doksuri increase to nine, four missing

– Doksuri, the 10th storm arisingin the East Sea and the strongest one hitting Vietnam in many years, claimednine lives, leaving four missing and 112 injured, according to reports fromaffected localities by 10pm on September 16.

The storm swept though the central region on late September15.

According to the Central Steering Committee for NaturalDisaster Prevention and Control, the typhoon destroyed 1,185 houses, blew awayroofs of 152,599 houses, and submerged 10,923 others.

Seven fishing vessels and 183 small boats were sunk, while29 sea dykes along the coasts of the northern and central regions and 10 smallirrigational dams were damaged.

Storm Doksuri also inundated 4,473ha of rice and 8,277ha ofother crops, affected 16,108ha of aquatic farming, and ruined 10km of nationalhighways and 17.9km of local roads.

According to the Electricity of Vietnam, electricity supplyto over 1.3 million customers was cut off due to the storm. As of 3pm on September16, the group resumed power supply for nearly 780,000 customers in seriously-affectedareas such as Dong Hoi city of Quang Binh, several towns and districts of NgheAn, Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa provinces.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural DisasterPrevention and Control has mobilized all forces to find missing victims,restore the electricity system, and repair transport, irrigational facilitiesand dykes, and help locals repair their houses and clean up the environment.

It also requested the local Steering Committees for NaturalDisaster Prevention and Control to keep a close watch on flood developments inthe northern and northern central regions.-VNA
