Dong Ho painting-inspired ballet staged in Hanoi

The ballet “Dong Ho”, with choreography based on Dong Ho folk paintings, was debuted recently by the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet at the Hanoi Opera House.

Staged by versatile choreographer Nguyen Ngoc Anh, the ballet combines the folk-themed paintings with the melodious sound of the concerto Four Seasons of Vivaldi.

Vietnamese folk paintings such as “Hung dua”, “Dam cuoi chuot”, and “Vinh quy bai to” were featured through graceful dances, which are a marriage of Vietnamese folk and Western classical art genres.

A gallery of Dong Ho paintings was arranged in the foyer, offering visitors a greater insight into Vietnam’s folk art.

“Dong Ho” gives choreographer Anh the chance to express his feelings about the art and the culture of the folk paintings of the same name. He not only focuses on storytelling but also wants to lead the audience towards sophistication conveyed in a more abstract and sensory manner.

Through the dance, the audience can see a close connection based on the humanistic values of the Vietnamese people the choreographer hopes to convey./.
