Da Lat gears up for bloom boom

The city will welcome 2012 with millions of colourful flowers as thelatest edition of the biennial Flower Festival gets underway on NewYear's Eve.

The five-day festival will honour those whogrow and sell flowers by presenting them to the public in a floralparade and awarding a slew of prizes. The festival will feature 21cultural activities including flower exhibitions and music and danceperformances that more than 1,000 artists will participate in.

Anestimated 300,000 visitors including foreigners are expected to attendthe festival, according to Truong Van Thu, vice chairman of the People'sCommittee of Lam Dong province.

The opening ceremony ofthe festival, called Da Lat Flowers – the World of Colours on Dec. 31,will have a special display of around 120,000 tulip branches as well asflower species specific to Da Lat.

Meanwhile, thousands ofspecies of flowers from Da Lat and other localities nationwide as wellas other countries will be on display at different locations in thecity.

Around the Xuan Huong Lake that is locatedin the heart of the city, several stands will present flowers mostcommonly grown in Da Lat.

Among the more prominent flowerdisplays of the festival are: a Space for Da Lat Flowers around theXuan Huong Lake ; a Slope of Cherries on Le Dai Hanh street; a WildFlower Hill at the Da Lat Flower Park; and a Carpet of Wild Flowers atthe Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Park.

The opening ceremony and the festival's main events will be telecast live, organisers said.

Apart from the magnificent floral displays, a scientific seminar onflowers and a trade and tourism exhibition will be organised.

The exhibition stalls will present the goods and services of both domestic and foreign companies.

Other festivities highlighting the area's most famed products willinclude a wine event on January 3, which will offer for free thousandsof litres of Da Lat wine.

A food festival, a streetfestival called Flowers and Light, and a street fashion show at theXuan Huong Park are expected to be popular events.

A parade of 15 vehicles bedecked with fresh flowers will weave through Da Lat's main streets during the festival.

"We're doing many things to make Da Lat as pretty as possible," saidNguyen Vu Hoang, director of the festival's organising board.

The Da Lat Urban Works Management Company will be responsible forsetting up large panels of flowers and flower towers throughout thecity.

The Da Lat Flower Garden, where the internationalflower exhibition will take place, is being rearranged and parterresreplanted to make sure that the flowers will bloom at festival time.

All households in Da Lat have been encouraged to grow flowers; andhorticulturists are caring for ochna trees along the city's main streetsso they will be in bloom as the festival begins.

Ninety-two businesses, including many tourism agencies like Vietravel,Hanoi Tourism, SaigonTourist and Lua Viet are actively involved inpreparing for the festival./.

Over 100 burials from 4000 years ago discovered in Hanoi

Archaeologists from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, the Hanoi Museum and the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities have announced the discovery of over 70 graves from the pre-Dong Son period and 40 graves from Dong Son period at the Vuon Chuoi archaeological relic in Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district.

Festival promotes Vietnam-RoK cultural exchange

Hanoi Ao dai dance marks Vietnamese women’s day
