Czech professor passionate about Vietnam

A Czech professor has won the Phan Chau Trinh Cultural Award 2010 for his research and translation works as well as activities to promote the Vietnamese culture to the Czech community.

Starting tolearn Vietnamese and do research on Vietnam in 1959, Prof. Dr. IvoVasiliev has made great contributions to connecting the two cultures ofVietnam and the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia ).


He is the translator of the Czech version of President Ho Chi Minh’s“Nhat ky trong tu” (Prison diary) poem collection. In addition, he hasintroduced to Czech readers more than 60 poems by 50 other Vietnameseauthors as well as research works on the culture, history and traditionof the Vietnamese nation.


Talking with Ivo Vasiliev,one can hardly notice any foreign accent in his Vietnamese. But aboveall, he has a deep understanding of Vietnam .


Theresearcher remarked that Vietnamese people are open, friendly and fondof joking. He said he also likes the Vietnamese family ties and the wayof thanking that it is a bliss when children surpass their parents.


For Ivo Vasiliev, translating Vietnamese poems into Czech is anenjoyable job as he can discover many things interesting. He said he hasa passion for poems on love during the war.


At the ageof 80, with over 50 visits to Vietnam , Ivo Vasiliev is stillpassionate about the Vietnamese topic. He confided that each visit toVietnam for him is like “returning to the homeland”.


At present, the professor is joining with engineer Nguyen Quyet Tien, aVietnamese in Czech, to compile two new Czech-Vietnamese andVietnamese-Czech dictionaries.


Together with theVietnamese Association in Czech, he is implementing a project to improvethe position of the Vietnamese community in his country./.

Over 100 burials from 4000 years ago discovered in Hanoi

Archaeologists from the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, the Hanoi Museum and the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities have announced the discovery of over 70 graves from the pre-Dong Son period and 40 graves from Dong Son period at the Vuon Chuoi archaeological relic in Kim Chung commune, Hoai Duc district.

Festival promotes Vietnam-RoK cultural exchange

A cultural festival has been held in Uijeongbu city of the Republic of Korea (RoK)'s Gyeonggi province to mark the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Association (VWA) in the country.

Hanoi Ao dai dance marks Vietnamese women’s day

More than 70,000 women from across the capital city of Hanoi dressed up in Ao dai (traditional long dress) and participated in a folk dance ensemble on October 20 to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hanoi and the 94th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Union.

The Vietnam Jungle Marathon (VJM) returns for its seventh edition, welcoming around 1,500 runners from almost 40 nations to the stunning trails of Pu Luong Nature Reserve in Thanh Hoa province on October 19, featuring picturesque 10km to 70km routes.

Vietnam attends UNESCO Executive Board’s 220th session in France
