Da Nang (VNA) – The Da Nang International Fireworks Festival this year(DIFF 2020) has been cancelled by the municipal People’s Committee outof fears over the spread of the acute respiratory disease caused by a new coronavirus (COVID-19) ravaging the region.
The annualfestival was initially scheduled to take place this summer.
The success ofthe festival over years has contributed to improving local people’s quality oflife, boosting tourism andheightening Da Nang’sreputation as a friendly city among international visitors, according to a representative from the city’sDepartment of Culture, Sports and Tourism which organises the event.
However, asthe COVID-19 epidemic remainscomplex while the main sources of supplies for the festivals are in hard-hit areas, so the festival had to be cancelled, he said.
The Da NangInternational Fireworks Festival was first introduced in 2008, attractingthousands of spectators every year since then.
Held underthe theme of “Stories by the rivers” from June 1 to July 6, lastyear’s DIFF created a truly jubilant festival atmosphere throughout thecity, drawing nearly 1 million touristsfrom throughout Vietnam and all over the world.
On February20, the Hue Festival 2020, due to be held in April, was also postponed toAugust 28 because of the same reason./.
