Hanoi (VNA) – The Cong Hien (Devotion) Music Awards 2019 has recognized the efforts to renew and experiment new things of artists in various aspects, from composing to performing and programme producing.
The awards ceremony of the 14th Cong Hien (Devotion) Music Awards (2019) was held in the evening of April 16 in Ho Chi Minh City, with the attendance of Party Central Committee member and Director General of the Vietnam News Agency Nguyen Duc Loi, and Editor-in-Chief of the The Thao& Van Hoa (Sports and Culture) newspaper Le Xuan Thanh, who is head of the 2019 awards’ organizing board.
The mark of young artists
According to Editor-in-Chief Le Xuan Thanh, this year, besides the familiar big names like Thanh Lam, My Linh, Pham Phuong Thao, Lan Anh or Tung Duong, many new faces emerged among the nominees for the awards such as Bui Lan Huong, Phung Khanh Linh, Thai Vu, Phan Manh Quynh, Bich Phuong and Toc Tien.
“With what they did in the past year, we can say that the young artists are the hope of Vietnamese music. We hope that the Devotion Awards will channel more will and aspiration for them to firmly advance on the glorious path of creativity, which is also full of challenges and spikes and thorns, thus contributing to the richness and development of Vietnamese music,” said the head of the 2019 awards’ organizing board.
Many young artists had their names announced in various categories of the awards.
The song Co Ai Thuong Em Nhu Anh(Who Loves Me as You Did)–composer Bui Cong Nam, singer Toc Tien – was named the Song of the Year. The song attracts music lovers with catching melody and sad lyrics, while Toc Tien’s voice showed passion and seductiveness that is new for her, while still keeping her familiar fierceness.
With her distinctive marks, singer-composer Bui Lan Huong was named New Artist of the Year. In 2018, Huong issued her album Thien Than Sa Nga (Fallen Angel), performed the song Ngay Chua Giong Bao (The Day When Storm Has Not Come) in the film Nguoi Bat Tu (Immortal Person) and the song Tinh Yeu Mau Nang (Sunshine-coloured Love) in the jazz style in the film Glee.
“This is an extremely touching moment in my life,” Huong said. She was considered a new and potential factor of Vietnam music. The album Thien Than Sa Nga clearly demonstrated the spirit of experiment when she explored dream pop, a new genre very new to Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Bua Yeu (Love Potion) directed by Tan Ds, authored by Tien Cookie, Pham Thanh Ha, Duong K and performed by singer Bich Phuong) won the Music Video of the Year. “The award is a great encouragement for me to continue create and contribute new quality works to the music scene in the time ahead,” said singer Phuong.
Young singer Ha Anh Tuan made a double success when his name was announced twice, in the Show of the Year and Music Series of the Year.
Young singer-songwriter Vu Cat Tuong won the Musician of the Year Award.
Tuong’s latest album Stardom features 10 songs reflecting different aspects of daily life.
The 27-year-old was also named New Artist of the Year at the Devotion Music Awards in 2015 with her debut album Giai Ma (Decryption).
Dong Nhi was named Singer of the Year. Last year, Nhi organised Ten on Ten, her biggest-ever show, in HCM City to celebrate her 10-year singing career.
Her first album The First Step was named one of the Top 10 Albums of the Year in 2010 at the Zing Music Awards.
The 32-year-old has released four albums and several singles, many of them hits, and has appeared in reality music shows as a competitor and mentor.
Nhi won the Best Asian Artist title at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in 2015, and Best Southeast Asian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2016.
Affirming diva status
The Album of the Year title was awarded to veteran singer My Linh's Chat with Mozart 2, which features classical melodies by Mozart, Bach, Liszt and others with Vietnamese lyrics written by veteran musician Duong Thu.
Linh also received the award for Chat with Mozart in 2006.
The Devotion Music Awards has been organized annually since 2004 by the The Thao& Van Hoa newspaper of the Vietnam News Agency to promote Vietnamese music and honour artists who have made significant contributions to the industry./.
