Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang (Photo: VNA)Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang won a silver medal at the men’s 1,500mfreestyle event, the first ASIAD silver in swimming for Vietnam.
Finishing at 15:01.63, Hoang lost the gold medal to his Chinese rival Sun Yangwho completed the race at 14:58.53.
The other silver was carried off by female rowers - Pham Thi Hue, Dinh Thi Hao, Le Thi Hien andTran Thi An - at the women’s four event with 7:14.52.
The same day, marksman Ngo Huu Vuong won bronze after beating his Chinese rival6-1 at the men’s 10m running target event, while Duong Thi Thanh Minh broughthome a bronze medal in the women’s Ne-waza Ju-Jitsu 49kg event.
This is the first time Vietnam has earned a medal in a Ju-Jitsu event, as wellas the first time this sport is included in ASIAD. The medal also marks thefirst major success from Minh, who used to be a Judo athlete.
However, a technical error deprived gymnast Le Thanh Tung of his medal-winningchances in the men’s vault event, which marked a disappointing end for theVietnam gymnastics team who will go home empty-handed.
Vietnam’s female football team lost 3-4 to Taiwan in the penalty shootout aftera 0-0 draw in the 120 minutes of the quarterfinal of the ASIAD 2018.
As of 22pm on August 24, Vietnam ranked 16th in the medal tally with one gold,six silver, and nine bronze medals. China kept its first position with 66 goldmedals, followed by Japan with 29 golds, and the Republic of Korea with 23golds. Host Indonesia was in the fifth place with nine gold medals.–VNA
