Jakarta (VNA) – Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan won the first silvermedal for Vietnam at the ongoing Asian Games 2018 (ASIAD) in Indonesia onAugust 20.
With a total lift of 280kg, Tuanwas defeated by Om Yun-chol from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, wholifted 7kg higher than him, in the men’s 56kg category.
At the ASIAD 2014 in the Republicof Korea, Tuan also missed the chance to clinch a gold medal to Om.
During the day, the Vietnamesedelegation also won another bronze medal after swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoangfinished third in the men’s 800m freestyle with a timing of 7:54.32.
The gold medal went to China’sSun Yang with a timing of 7:48.36 – a new ASIAD record, while Shogo Takeda ofJapan won the silver medal with a result of 7:53.01.
As of 8:30 pm of August 20, Vietnamranked 15th in the medal tally with one silver and three bronze medals. Chinastill topped the rankings with 15 gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze medals.
Vietnam’s sports delegation tothe ASIAD consists of 532 members, including 352 athletes. It aims to snatch aminimum of three gold medals, with at least one in an Olympic sports category.–VNA
