Hanoi (VNA) – The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) undersea cable wasfully repaired on the night of January 23, restoring full Internet connectivitybetween Vietnam and foreign countries, two days earlier than scheduled, arepresentative of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT)confirmed.

Following a reconfiguration of the AAG cable system from January 6-9, the AAGoperator found a new rupture on the system’s section S1 to Vietnam, and intendedto conduct a reconfiguration for the section from January 21-25. However, thework was completed in the evening of January 23.

Earlier, the Asia-Pacific Getaway (APG) was temporarily closed down on January6 when the APG cable was moved from current position to another place due tothe Singaporean Government’s plan to expand Changi International Airport.

The AAG and APG submarine cables are the two main systems connecting Vietnamwith the world, therefore, the cable breaks greatly affected the country.
 
The AAG has a totallength of 20,000 km, connecting Southeast Asia with the United States. Theroute’s connecting point with Vietnam is part of the S1 section, extending 314kilometres and coming on land in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

The 10,400km-long APG is an undersea cable system linking eight countries andterritories in the Asia-Pacific region -- Malaysia, Singapore, China andChina’s Hong Kong as well as Taiwan, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Vietnam.

Statistics from theVietnam Internet Association shows that the country currently now has over 50million internet users.-VNA
