Vietnam’s commitment at COP26 opens up chances for low-emission growth cooperation: official

Vietnam's commitment and responsible contributions at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) were highly appreciated by the international community, opening up many opportunities for cooperation in low-emission growth and promoting circular economy in adaptation to climate change, said a Vietnamese official.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam's commitment and responsiblecontributions at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of theParties (COP26) were highly appreciated by the international community, openingup many opportunities for cooperation in low-emission growth and promoting circulareconomy in adaptation to climate change, said a Vietnamese official.

Pham Van Tan, deputy head of the Department of ClimateChange under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, made the remarks at a workshop on the outcomes of COP26 held on December 7. The Vietnamesedelegation to the conference, taking place in Glasgow, the UK, from October 30to November 13, was headed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Delivering a report on Vietnam’s implementation of the COP26outcomes, Tan said the revised 2020 Law on Environmental Protection and a draftdecree on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the ozone layerhave been developed to be fully consistent with the latest regulations justadopted at the conference, serving as the legal foundation to mobilise the entire society's engagement in coping with climate change.

He said however, the biggest challenge facing Vietnam is how to mobilise and maintain the involvement of the entire political system for the mission. A shortageof domestic resources, particularly human resources, also poses problems.

Giorgio Aliberti, Ambassador of the European Union toVietnam, recommended Vietnam continue increasing awareness and determinationacross its public agencies at all levels, localities, organisations andindividuals regarding the green transition process.

He proposed that the Vietnamese Government and PrimeMinister need to soon issue the decree on mitigating greenhouse gas emissionsand protecting the ozone layer; and carbon market development project, amongothers.

Increasing international cooperation on finance, technologyand capacity improvement for the implementation of the nation’s commitments tothe Paris Agreement and to COP26 is also necessary, he added./.
