Vietnamese, Lao procuracies bolster cooperation in drug crime combat

Quang Nam (VNA) – Prosecutors fromVietnamese and Lao border provinces discussed measures to increase theefficiency of the fight against drug crime at a conference in the centralprovince of Quang Nam on July 18.

The event is the fifth meeting of thepeople’s procuracy agencies of provinces along the Vietnam-Laos border.

Speaking at the conference, VietnameseProsecutor General Le Minh Tri reviewed the cooperation in fighting drug crime betweenthe Supreme People’s Procuracies of Vietnam and Laos following the fourth meetingof border provinces held in Luang Prabang in October 2015.

The two sides have intensified informationsharing and cooperation in investigation, so that a lot of major ringsoperating in the border areas have been detected and razed.

Within the framework of the ASEANCommunity, the two procuracies have actively participated in building thecommunity, and intensified communication activities to enhance prosecutors’awareness about the role of the community, Tri added.

Lao Prosecutor General Khamsan Suvongstated that in the context of international integration, trans-nationalorganised crime, especially drug crime, is threatening social security, orderand safety, and impacting the economy’s stability.

He stressed the need for the two countriesto foster cooperation at the local, national, regional and global levels.

At the meeting, participants suggested thetwo countries push forward with cooperation in prosecutor training, teach theVietnamese and Lao languages to prosecutors in border provinces, and encourageprocuracies in provinces and districts along the border line to increase theexchange of delegation exchanges for information and experience sharing.

The Supreme People’s Procuracies were urgedto complete procedures for the early signing of a new mutual judicialassistance agreement on criminal affairs.

Both sides agreed to organise the sixthmeetng in Laos in 2019.-VNA
