New York (VNA) – Poverty eradication, which is identified as an overarching goal of the 2030 Agenda, remains the greatest global development challenge, said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

She made the statement during a speech at the 54th session of the UN Commission on Social Development in New York on February 4.

She said she considered global partnership a major driving force behind social development.

“The international community should strengthen cooperation, including the fulfilment of development assistance commitments, enhancing capacity building and technology transfers, and creating favourable conditions for developing countries in formulating and implementing social development policies,” Nga said.

She stressed the necessity of a coherent approach, aligning social policies with economic policies and environmental goals and contributing to the realization of the 2030 Agenda.

As part of her speech, the diplomat introduced Vietnam’s achievements in alleviating poverty and improving social welfare policies targeting women, senior citizens, people with disabilities and ethnic minorities.

The UN Commission on Social Development convened its 54 th session on February 3 under the theme of “Rethinking and Strengthening Social Development in the Contemporary World”. The session took place after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
