Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) will provide250 million VND (10,900 USD) in cash to flood victims in the northern mountainous provincesof Lai Chau and Ha Giang.
According to the VRCS Central Committee, Lai Chau will receive 150million VND and Ha Giang 100 million VND to distribute to families of victimswho were dead or injured during the flood.
The society will sent working groups to Lai Chau, bringing along relieffor local residents.
Vice President of the VRCS Tran Thi Hong An said after traffic isresumed in the two provinces, the society will organize teams to transportnecessities and clean water to flood-hit areas.
Also on June 25, the Hanoi Red Cross Society handed over 50 million VNDto the VRCS to help flood victims.
The Red Cross Societies of Lai Chau and Ha Giang have also granted aidto families with dead and injured victims.
Heavy rains over the past few days caused massive floods and landslidesin the northern mountainous region, with Lai Chau and Ha Giang being thehardest hit. As of 6 am on June 25, the death toll in flood and landslides roseto seven, with five in Lai Chau and two in Ha Giang, according to the CentralSteering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.
At the same time, eight people inLai Chau went missing and five were injured.
Floods and landslides also destroyed and damaged hundreds of houses,hundreds of hectares of rice and crop.
National roads 4D and 279 connecting Lao Cai and Lai Chau were blockedby masses of soil and stones from serious landslides, causing trafficcongestion. Some provincial roads of Lai Chau were also damaged.
Total losses are estimated to reach over 76.6 billion VND, with Lai Chaubeing the hardest hit with damages amounting to about 60 billion VND.-VNA
