Vietnam, Malaysia enjoy thriving relations over five decades

Vietnam and Malaysia enjoyed close ties even before they officially established diplomatic relations on March 30, 1973.

Over the five decades since, the bilateral relationship has been continually reinforced and promoted across all fields, from politics and diplomacy to defence and security as well as economy and culture. This is especially the case since the Southeast Asian neighbours elevated their cooperation to a strategic partnership in 2015.

Economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia has continually flourished.

Malaysia has for many years been one of the biggest trade and investment partners of Vietnam.

Vietnam is currently Malaysia’s 11th-largest trade partner and seventh-largest export market.

The upgrading of bilateral relations to a “Strategic Partnership” in 2015 further promoted cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia in many fields, especially politics - diplomacy, defence - security, and trade - investment.

Tourism, education, renewable energy, healthcare services, and the Halal food industry are also promising fields of cooperation between the two countries.

Vietnam and Malaysia have always supported each other and actively cooperated at regional and international forums such as the UN, ASEAN, and APEC.

Based on the results of their effective cooperation and recognising that cooperative opportunities between the two countries remain substantial, Vietnam and Malaysia have agreed to seek new areas of cooperation.

The achievements over the past half-century have created a solid foundation for the Vietnam-Malaysia relationship.

The 50-year mark is the basis for the two countries to continue to tighten their friendship and effectively tap the potential of further cooperation, deepening the strategic partnership towards a new chapter in bilateral relations./.
