Quang Tri (VNA) – The provinces of Quang Tri in the central region of Vietnam and Savannakhet and Salavan in Laos have reviewed the progress of a joint project to increase and upgrade border markers along the shared border.

Participants acknowledged the active and effective cooperation among the three provinces during the implementation of the project, which lead to an early finish of the work.

Vietnam and Laos share a 2,340 km borderline, including 206km crossing between Quang Tri and Savannakhet and Salavan provinces where a total of 30 markers were planted.

The project of increasing and upgrading the border market was launched in 2008, with Quang Tri and Savannakhet chosen as the first implementing localities.

The two sides commenced the construction of the first duo-marker in June 2008. The last marker was planted four years later, concluding the building and upgrading of the marker system in Quang Tri, Savannakhet and Salavan earlier than scheduled.

The early conclusion of the project has significantly supported the management and protection of the borderline in both countries, while helping to expand trade and investment cooperation and strengthening people-to-people contacts.

Since early 2013, the Steering Committees for Border Marker Planting in the three localities have coordinated closely in examining the sites and proposing the National Border Committees of both Vietnam and Laos reinforcing the foundation of eight markers located in areas with a high risk of landslides.-VNA
