Hanoi (VNA) – Expertsand business representatives all stressed the need for a strategy for thedevelopment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Vietnam at a thematic workshopheld in the framework of the 2019 Vietnam Economic Forum in Hanoi on January17.
Deputy Minister of Science andTechnology Bui The Duy said such a strategy needs to define Vietnam’s targetsand measures to realise those targets, based on an accurate assessment of thesize of the domestic AI market.
He noted that there has not yetbeen any official survey on the size of the AI market in Vietnam, and availablereports on the world and regional AI markets contain no information on thecountry. At the same time, AI has not been included in the investment lists ofmany Vietnamese companies, and if it did, the investment is insignificant.
According to the DeputyMinister, this means the AI market in Vietnam is small and businesses’ commitmentto the market is not obvious. However, this is also an opportunity for thosewho want to engage in this field.
Deputy Minister Duy said in sucha situation, the State, with both roles as the largest consumer and the leaderof the economy, should become the strategic investor in core AI elements. Thefirst task is to build the national AI strategy and policies to stimulate thismarket.
Participants at the workshopshared experience in starting business in the field of AI and in how to ridethe wave of AI, grasp opportunities and deal with challenges in building thefoundation for technology sharing.
