Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen ThiKim Ngan met with Myanmar President Win Myint in Hanoi on May 11, describingthe latter’s attendance in the UN Day of Vesak celebration in Vietnam as acontribution to the event’s success.
The host leader said the UN Day of Vesak is animportant event of global Buddhists, including in Vietnam and Myanmar, adding theMyanmar delegation’s presence will help with the celebration’s success, therebycontributing to regional peace and cooperation.
President Win Myint said this is the first timehe has come to Vietnam, stressing that the two countries have recorded fruitfulcooperation.
He affirmed Myanmar’s support for Vietnam’scandidacy for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021tenure.
The President said during his term, he will alsowork to intensify partnership with Vietnam, particularly in economy, trade andinvestment.
With 18 projects worth 2.1 billion USD, Vietnamnow ranks seventh among the 49 countries investing in Myanmar. Bilateral tradehas surged from 152.3 million USD in 2010 to nearly 860 million USD in 2018.
At the meeting, Chairwoman Ngan said the twocountries have enjoyed growing ties between their parliaments, which signed acooperation agreement in September 2013 and have coordinated closely andeffectively at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums.
President Win Myint noted Myanmar will supportVietnam when the country holds the chair of ASEAN and the ASEANInter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2020 so as to continue contributing tothe ASEAN Community’s development.-VNA
