Bangkok (VNA) – Thai police affirmed on August 14 that they know who was behind a series of bombings that rocked well-known tourist destinations across the south.
“Our investigation is progressing. We know who was behind it,” deputy police spokesman Piyapan Pingmuang said, adding that “I reaffirmed that it was an act of local sabotage, not terrorism. We do not have terrorism in Thailand.”
Meanwhile, deputy national police chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen believed that the attacks were clearly connected. “These acts were undertaken by a group in many areas simultaneously, following orders from one individual,” he noted.
Two people have been detained for questioning in Hua Hin, a popular beach resort while an arrest warrant had been issued for a man in relation to one of the arson attacks on a supermarket in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
At least 11 bombs went off across five southern Thai provinces over the past 24 hours, killing four people and wounding dozens others, including foreigners.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts.
The bombs, most of them detonated in twin blasts, exploded on the eve of Queen Sirikit’s 84 th birthday and just before the first anniversary of the Bangkok shrine bombing that killed 20 people.-VNA
