– Thai police have busted a scammer gang based in Cambodia.

Deputy Chief of theTourist Police Bureau Pol Maj Gen Surachet Hakpan, on December 29 held a pressconference on the arrest of the 20-member gang following complaints that anumber of victims were duped into transferring money to those claiming to bestate authorities.   

Surachet said police hadbeen tracking fraud gangs and had captured the one led by a Taiwanese namedChen Yuan Kai. Chen’s gang members were divided into two groups. The firstgroup consisted of females who posed as government officials. The latter was comprisedof males who pretended to be police.

The Taiwanese scammer hadbeen arrested before but escaped from the country after being released on bail.He then formed a scammer ring. His Thai wife undertakes the procurement ofconmen with Mr. Paisan On-em as an assistant. Five gang members have fledoverseas. All the gang members have been charged with fraud and involvement ina transnational crime organization.

Police have also held amedia conference on countrywide sweeps against crime, with news of the arrestsof 30 suspects found in possession of firearms and drugs.-VNA
