HCM City (VNA) – Russian and domestic experts gathered at a seminar on December 3 in Ho Chi Minh City to discuss how to develop nuclear power in an effective and safe manner.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Nuclear Energy under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and the Russia’s State Nuclear Energy Corporation(Rosatom).
An expert from Rosatom introduced the Water-Water Energetic Reactor (VVER) technology, especially the most advanced VVER-TOI technology, which has been proven effective and safe in nuclear power development.
According to Associate Prof. Dr. Pavel A. Belousov from the Russia National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI ), as many as 57 Russia-designed VVERs have operated effectively and safely in 19 nuclear plants across 11 nations.
Director of the Department of Nuclear Energy Hoang Anh Tuan said that Vietnam has continuously attached importance to the safe and effective nuclear energy development in line with the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Vietnam has sent experts to Russia to be trained on the VVER-TOI technologyand perfect its relevant legal framework in a bid to safely operate its nuclear power plants in the future, he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety Le Quang Hiep stressed the need for Vietnam to learn international experience in the field to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear energy.-VNA
