Speakingat the event, Director General of the General Statistics Office (GSO) ofVietnam Nguyen Bich Lam said the census will collect detailed information aboutthe country’s population and housing, which will serve as a basis for thereview of the socio-economic development 2011-2020 and the building of a socio-economicplan for 2021-2030.
Theoutcomes of the census is also meant to appraise the fulfillment of the UnitedNations’ Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, build a database onpopulation statistics in line with the Law on Statistics, and supplement the national,ministry and industry database for further study, analysis and forecast of populationgrowth and housing development nationwide and in each locality, thus serving e-governmentbuilding at four levels.
UnitedNations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Vietnam Astrid Bantunderscored the significance of the census, saying that it will help theVietnamese government monitor achievements towards the UN MillenniumDevelopment Goals.
VuThi Xuan Mai, head of the GSO’s Population and Labour Statistics Department, saidthe census is conducted every 10 years, starting from April 1, in order toevaluate national targets and indicators of sustainable development. The objectof the investigation is all Vietnamese people with permanent residences.
Estimatedcontents collected in the census will include statistical data on housing andliving conditions of households. Statistical data are integrated to meet therequirements of compiling several statistical indicators which will reflectemerging or important issues in population field.
Thebasis for data collection in the 2019 census includes the national statisticalindicator system enacted by the 2015 Law on Statistics, the statisticalindicator system at the provincial, district and communal levels, sets ofindicators on national development, youngsters, the Law on Vietnamese Children,and on socio-economic status of 53 ethnic minority groups across Vietnam.
Sharinglocal experiences from the 2009 census, Deputy Director of the Yen Baiprovincial Statistics Office Lam Le Bang stressed the need to rally theinvolvement of agencies, sectors and socio-political organisations in theeffort.
Vietnam’spopulation is estimated at more than 95.38 million people throughout over 25.93million households by 2019.
The census will be carried out in 173,000 locations, requiring over 200,000 investigatorsand inspectors.-VNA
