The Mekong Delta is Vietnam’s seafood production and export hub but the region still faces many challenges, such as disease outbreaks and difficulties in meeting market requirements for food origin. Boosting public-private partnerships for addressing these challenges was the main theme of a workshop held by the General Department of Fisheries in Ho Chi Minh City.
Shrimp and catfish farming in the Mekong Delta still faces the risk of disease spread. This problem, coupled with the abuse of antibiotics, has reduced the value of shrimp and tra fish exports. In addition, fisheries production in the Mekong Delta is still small and spontaneous, so it is very difficult to trace origin.
According to experts, public-private partnerships are essential, as they contribute to enhancing the role of individuals and organisations in the production chain.
The project promoting sustainable fishery development via strengthening public-private partnerships in the Mekong Delta has investment of 1.7 million USD, mainly from international and non-governmental organisations.
It is expected to solve the challenges facing the Mekong Delta’s fisheries to help it develop sustainably.-VNA
