Hanoi (VNA) - Nestlé Vietnam has helped over 20,000 households of coffeegrowers improve productivity and income through applying new technology from theNESCAFÉ Plan project, said the firm’s General Director Ganesan Ampalavanar.

Ganesan Ampalavanar revealed this information at the World Economic Forum onASEAN 2018 (WEF ASEAN 2018) from September 11 - 13 in Hanoi.

Ganesan Ampalavanar delivered a presentation at the panel session “Food Systems: Innovative ASEAN” and opened the session“Accelerating Trade and Investment in Asia Pacific”.

Atthe session on Food Systems - ASEAN Reform, Ganesan Ampalavanar emphasised theneed to shift the food system on the threat of supply shortage, saying that theapplication of technologies in agricultural production as well as change ofbusiness models are innovative ways to overcome the situation.

He also provided practical examples on what Nestlé Vietnam has been doing tohelp more than 20,000 coffee farmers improve their productivity and income throughapplying new techniques and technologies from the NESCAFÉ Plan.

While assessing the implementation of the initiative "New Vision inAgriculture" and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, Minister ofAgriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong highlighted the role playedby Nestlé Vietnam in promoting development and chain connectivity in the coffeesector.

In nearly eight years of implementation, NESCAFÉ Plan has formed areas of materialproduction, and coffee farmers have learned cultivation techniques to achievethe highest productivity and income, he noted.

Cuong said the key investor, Nestlé Vietnam, and Vietnamese businesses aredoing well their role as technical and administrative guides, buyers ofagricultural products, as well as processing organisers and value chain distributors.

Initiated by Nestlé Vietnam since2011, NESCAFÉ Plan has supported the sustainable coffee re-cultivationactivities by providing Vietnamese farmers with high quality coffee seedlingswith 50 percent of price supporting.

It aims to promote sustainable agriculture development andincrease the quality and yield of Vietnamese coffee trees, thus improving incomesfor about 500,000 coffee farmers.-VNA
