Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi KimNgan’s freshly-concluded visit to India and attendance of the 11th GlobalSummit of Women Speakers of Parliament in the UAE has helped cement ties with traditionalfriends while expanding cooperation with new partners.
Chairman of the NA’s External Relations Committee Nguyen Van Giau madethe assessment during an interview granted to the media following Ngan’s tripfrom December 8-13.
Giau noted that India is an important part in Vietnam’s foreign policy,as it is among four countries having a comprehensive strategic partnership withVietnam. NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan had a busy schedule during hertwo-day stay in India, with a series of meetings with Indian State,parliamentary and Government leaders.
He underlined the signing of the first cooperation agreement between theVietnamese NA and India’s Lower House, which marked a milestone inparliamentary ties between the two countries.
Vice President and Chairman of the Senate Mohammad Hamid Ansari told theVietnamese NA leader that India is willing to cooperate with Vietnam not onlyin economic activities but also in other fields such as science-technology andlabour.
At his meeting with the Vietnamese NA leader, Prime Minister NarendraModi affirmed the priority given to Vietnam in India’s Act East policy support.He also expressed support for Indian investment in oil and gas exploitation inVietnam’s continental shelf.
At the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, ChairwomanNgan co-chaired the discussion themed “Safeguard a Healthy Planet” anddelivered a speech at the discussion.
Giau noted that this is the first time Vietnam has attended the GlobalSummit of Women Speakers of Parliament, as Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is the first everChairwoman of the Vietnamese legislative body.
The Chairwoman held many bilateral meetings on the sideline of thesummit to discuss issues of shared concerns.
The UAE side appreciated Vietnam’s attendance at the summit andcontributions to the event’s success. The UAE parliament also expressed thewish to sign a cooperation agreement with Vietnam.-VNA
