Yangon (VNA) - The opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) of Myanmar has won 15 seats from constituencies in Yangon region.
The NLD gained 12 seats at the House of Representatives and three others at the region parliament.
Meanwhile, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won one seat in the same category.
The remaining result will be successively announced by the commission six times daily until completion, Chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) Tin Aye said.
According to NLD spokesman U Win Htein, the party’s parliamentary seats are estimated at more than 70 percent of the total nationwide.
The same day, Speaker of the parliament U Shwe Mann from USDP conceded defeat on his Facebook page. He lost a seat in the lower house to NLD’s Than Nyunt in Bago region’s Phyu constituency.
A total of 6,038 candidates involving 91 political parties and 310 independent runners competed for more than 1,000 seats at three levels of the parliament in the election.
Of the total, 1,733 candidates ran for seats of the House of Representatives, 886 for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), and 3,419 for Region or State Parliament.-VNA
