Myanmar: Yangon under high security alert ahead of election

The Myanmar government on November 6 placed Yangon region under high security alert on the threshold of the landmark general elections scheduled for November 8.

Hanoi (VNA) -The Myanmar government on November 6 placed Yangon region under high security alert on the threshold of the landmark general elections scheduled for November 8.

According to Myanmar Police Force, the alert, ranged as yellow, is effective from November 1 to 14. 

More than 3,000 police officers are being put on alert and reinforced by 5,400 out of 40,000 specially-trained police who are ready to provide additional security for the election.

According to the last update from the UEC, 6,040 candidates representing 91 registered political parties and independent candidates are running for over 1,000 seats in parliament and elected bodies at different levels. 

Among 1,163 constituencies, 330 constituencies are set to elect members of the House of Representatives, 168 constituencies to elect members of the House of Nationalities, 636 constituencies to elect regional or state parliaments and 29 constituencies to elect regional or state parliaments for ethnic groups. 

Eligible voters across the country totalled 32 million. Yangon is home to more than 4.9 million eligible voters who will cast their ballots at 5,495 polling stations.-VNA
