Nay Pyi Taw (VNA) – Myanmar’s newly elected Union Parliament convenes the first session in Nay Pyi Taw on February 8.
Speaker of the House of Nationalities (upper house) Mahn Win Khaing Than of the National League for Democracy (NLD) chaired the session attended by 648 members of the union parliament.
The session took place three months after the NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, marked a landslide victory in the November 8, 2015 general election, winning some 80 percent of the parliamentary seats.
The election of the new president and two vice presidents will begin on March 17. Candidates will be selected from the House of Representatives (lower house), the House of Nationalities and the army. The candidate who wins the most number of votes will be the president, while the remaining two will be vice presidents.-VNA
