Yen Bai (VNA) – Mountain peaks in Nam Khat, Cao Pha, La Pan Tan andMo De commune, Mu Cang Chai district, the northern mountainous province of YenBai have been covered with ice for the third time within only one month.
Travel has been hampered due to frost and heavy mist.
Temperature in the district fell under 3 degrees Celsius as a new strong coldspell hit northern region on February 5.
Mu Cang Chai district authorities have directed communes to quickly respond toprotect local people, trees and animals from the cold and avoid further losses.
From the beginning of this winter, 50 cattle in the district were killed as aresult of cold spells, including 10 buffalos, 7 cows and 32 calves.
The Office of the provincialSteering Committee for Natural Disasters Prevention and Control has recentlyasked northern and north central localities to keep themselves updated on developmentsof cold spells in order to timely alert local people, especially those inmountainous areas.
In a notice sent tothe district and communal steering boards for natural disaster prevention andsearch and rescue on February 1, the office urged the agencies to intensifycommunication work to guide farming households in how to fortify breedingfacilities, keep animals warm and reserve cattle feed during cold snaps.
At the same time, farmers should follow production schedule of theMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and protect crops fromimpacts of the severe weather, the office said.-VNA
