More than 180,000 graduates unemployed in Q2

The number of unemployed university graduates grew sharply in the second quarter of 2017, while the country’s unemployment rate declined slightly compared with the previous quarter, according to data of the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs.

Hanoi (VNA) - The number of unemployed university graduates grew sharplyin the second quarter of 2017, while the country’s unemployment rate declinedslightly compared with the previous quarter, according to data of the Instituteof Labour Science and Social Affairs.

In the second quarter,183,100 holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees couldn’t find jobs, up 44,200compared with the previous quarter, the report said. In the meantime, as manyas 1.08 million working-age Vietnamese were unemployed in the second quarter,20,000 fewer than in the previous quarter.

The unemployment rate inthe Mekong River Delta and southeastern provinces reached 2.95 percent and 2.65percent , respectively. The northern midlands and mountainous region andCentral Highlands, registered the lowest unemployment rate, at 0.95 and 1.05,respectively.

About24.5 percent of the unemployed have been out of work for more than 12 months.

Dao Quang Vinh, Director ofthe Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs, blamed the high unemploymentrate among holders of university and higher degrees on low demand in thebusiness sector in the second quarter. A lack of working experience also causeshigh unemployment among new graduates, he said.-VNA
