Jakarta (VNA) - The Indonesian DemocraticParty of Struggle (PDI-P) has nominated Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo asthe party's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
PDI-P chairwoman MegawatiSoekarnoputri announced the nomination duringthe party's internal consolidation and Eid al-Fitr gathering at BatuTulis, Bogor City, West Java.
To nominate a presidential candidate, a party mustobtain at least 20% of the total seats in parliament or 25% ofvotes in the previous legislative election.
PDI-P is the only party that meets this criterion asit has 22.26% of the seats in parliament. Other parties must form a coalitionif they want to nominate a presidential candidate.
Observers acknowledged that the nomination of GanjarPranowo as the PDI-P candidate will affect Indonesian politics in the comingtime. The Governor of Central Java has also received positive public assessments through recent surveys.
The Election Commission of Indonesia (KPU) and theMinistry of Interior have set February 14, 2024 as the date to hold the next general election toelect the President, Vice President, members of the Senate and House ofRepresentatives.
The nomination period for presidential andvice-presidential candidates will run from October 19 to November 25, 2023./.
