Jakarta (VNA) – Two international conferences on counter-terrorism opened on Bali island, Indonesia on August 10.
The two parallel events saw the participation of representatives from 20 countries and 3 international organisations, including Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock and ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh.
Addressing the events, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Legal, Politics, and Security Affairs Wiranto stressed that in the context of increasing terror threats and with the presence of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS), it is important to deploy all necessary measures to prevent and combat terrorism, hence stronger cooperation in a substantial pathway will be needed.
He clearly stated that current political instability, extreme ideology, social network and the increase of illegal financial resources are implicit factors that enhance terror attacks in the world, especially the “lone wolf” phenomenom.
The events were organised after Indonesian authorities on August 5 arrested six suspects over a plot to attack Singapore’s Marina Bay, by firing a rocket from Indonesia’s Batam island.
The group is said to have links to Bahrum Naim, an Indonesian who is fighting with IS in Syria. He is also the mastermind behind the attacks in Jakarta earlier this year.-VNA
