Jakarta (VNA) – Separatistgunmen shot an aircraft carrying soldiers and local officials in Indonesia’seasternmost province of Papua on January 28, killing one soldier and injuringanother.

Spokesman of Cendrawasih military commandCol. Muhammad Aidi said that the shooting occurred when the plane was about toland at an airport in Nduga district.

The rebels fled into the jungle aftersoldiers on the ground opened fire.

Two soldiers on the plane were injured andone later died in hospital, Muhammad Aidi stated.

Insurgency has simmered in the Papua regionsince it was annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Last December, an attack alsohappened in Nduga district, leaving 19 dead.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi
