Hanoi (VNA) – At least two people were killed, 21 others injuredand over 300 buildings damaged in an earthquake which hit Indonesia’s CentralJava province on April 18, a disaster agency official has said.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the natural disaster managementagency, said on April 19 that up to 316 houses, four mosques and two schoolbuildings were devastated, while 2,104 people have fled home to evacuation centres.
Nearly 200 soldiers and rescue personnel are jointly undertaking reliefefforts in the affected areas, he said.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.4 and a depth of 4 km, struck theprovince at 13:28 (local time) on April 18, according to the geophysics andmeteorology agency.
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes as the country lies at a vulnerablezone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.-VNA
