HCM City (VNA) – The Ho Chi Minh City Association of Farmers plans to present houses and Lunar New Year (Tet) gifts to its member and disadvantaged rural communities.
According to the association’s president, Nguyen Thi Bach Mai, around 50 houses, 1,500 gifts, and 500 water tanks will be offered to poor members of the association, while 1,500 scholarships will be granted to their children.
More than 23,000 local farmers will also receive support to pay for health insurance.
Mai said that a programme will be held on January 15 to honour outstanding farmers who have overcame difficulties and excelled in their work, while supporting others in difficult situations.
The organisers plan to raise over 13 billion VND (585,000 USD) for the programme, and 5 billion VND has been collected so far.
The annual event has been held for last seven years, and raised a total of 57 billion VND (2.56 million USD) from enterprises and individuals. The money was used to build 966 charitable houses and present nearly 8,600 gifts, over 2,600 water tanks and more than 2,200 TVs to disadvantaged farmers.
The programme has contributed to the city’s poverty reduction efforts and new-style rural areas.-VNA
