Efforts to save Dong Ho folk painting

After 500 years of existence, Dong Ho paintings the making of the painting is now on the brink of oblivion.

Dong Ho paintings used to be essential decorations in Vietnamese houses during the traditional Lunar New Year festival. However, after 500 years of existence, the making of the painting is now on the brink of oblivion.

Most villagers in Ho village, Thuan Thanh district, the home of Dong Ho painting now make votive paper. Only two families maintain the traditional craft.

In 1995, artisan Nguyen Dang Che, now 82 years old, convinced his family members to stop making votive paper and resume their old livelihood making Dong Ho paintings. Che now runs an enterprise making Dong Ho painting and earns a stable profit.
