Ede ethnic minority celebrates the health for the elderly

For Ede ethnic people, older people are highly respected members of the community. Ede people in Ako Dhong village in Buon Me Thuot city, Dak Lak province, have recently re-enacted a health wishing festival for the elderly, aiming to show their gratitude and love for their dear ones.

During the health wishing festival celebrated at the village’s communal house, as the drum sounds and traditional instruments start to ring, the festival comes alive.

Ede people gather around and dance to celebrate the elderly of the community, with offerings including 12 jars of traditional liquor, two chickens, one ox and two pigs. A shaman begins to do rituals to invite the gods and ancestors to grant health and longevity to the elderly.

The event is considered to be one of the most important festivals of the Ede ethnic group. The festival serves as a reminder for the young to respect their elders. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.-VNA
