Hanoi (VNA) – A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the southernPhilippines on April 16, less than one week after the region was hit by a 6.0quake.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs),the quake, which struck at 4:46 am (local time), had its epicenter 12kilometres to the west of Wao town in Lanao del Sur province while itshypocenter was at a depth of five kilometers.
Although there isyet any report on damage following the earthquake, the Phivolcs said that therecould be a number of aftershocks.
The 6.0 quake one week ago destroyed dozens of houses and forced locals to fleeto safe shelters. It was felt in 16 cities and towns in the south, includingmajor urban centres like Davao and Cagayan de Oro.
The Philippines is in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean where a largenumber of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. In February, a strong 6.7magnitude earthquake shook Surigao city in the southern region, killing andinjuring more than 100 people.-VNA
