Dozens of gunmen attack police post in southern Thailand

As many as 12 police officers were injured as dozens of gunmen on April 3 attacked a police post in Yala province in restive Muslim-majority southern Thailand. This was the largest attack in the area in many years, said Thai authorities.

Hanoi (VNA) – As many as 12 police officers wereinjured as dozens of gunmen on April 3 attacked a police post in Yala province inrestive Muslim-majority southern Thailand.

This was the largest attack in the area in many years, saidThai authorities.

About 30 gunmen surrounded a police post in Yala and fired more than 500 shotsto the post, affirmed Major General Kritsada Kaewchandee, police chief of Yalaprovince.

In February 2017, the Thai military government struck a deal with the MARAPatani, an Islamic insurgent group on the establishment of a “safe zone” infive districts of three provinces in southern Thailand.

However, one month later, a bloody attack which claimed fourlives including an eight-year-old child, took place in Narathiwat province.-VNA
