Dak Nong (VNA) – The Central Highlands province of Dak Nong is surveying thevolcanic cave system in Krong No district to compile a dossier seeking UNESCO’srecognition as a global geopark.

The KrongNo volcanic cave system, discovered by Japanese scientists in 2014, is locatedin the special-use forest of Dray Sap, along the Serepok River from Buon Choahcommune to Dray Sap Waterfall.

Itconsists of a number of caves with various sizes and shapes.

Scientistshave studied three caves, including one that is more than 1km long and believedto be the biggest lava cave in Southeast Asia. The two others are 594.4 metresand 456.7 metres long.

Thevolcanic cave system in Krong No holds significant scientific and tourismvalues, scientists say.

With aview to raising public awareness of managing and preserving its geologicalvalues, the management board for the Krong No volcanic cave geopark and theVietnam National Museum of Nature opened a training course in the district onNovember 30.

Ittargets local officials and residents who will directly manage and protect thecave system.-VNA
