President of the Vietnam Foundry and Metallurgy Science & Technology Association (VFMSTA) Pham Chi Cuong made the statement at the 13th Asian metal-casting conference, held in Hanoi on October 28.
According to Cuong, the support industry connects metalwork and mechanical engineering and accounts for up to 70 percent of the mechanical manufacturing’s value.
In Vietnam, the industry has yet to thoroughly compile statistics on its outputs, products, technology level and equipment use.
Cuong urged the sectors to establish a specialised document that includes detailed and precise profiles of foundries nationwide. This could open up greater business connectivity domestically while helping foreign clients seek partners in Vietnam and policymakers design relevant strategies, he noted.
Associate Professor Nguyen Huu Dung from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST)’s Institute of Materials Science and Technology said Asia holds high potential for the industry’s development. Official statistics revealed that the region makes up 50 percent of the world’s metal-casting yield.
Production in Vietnam is only adequate for domestic consumption with competition taking place inside the national boundaries. The nation targets an annual production of 2 million tonnes of metal-castings by 2020.
Moving forward, the Government expects to approve a range of foreign-invested projects that can help the local industry improve its technology and product quality.
The conference gathered 230 participants, including 130 foreign representatives from India, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and Poland, among others.-VNA
