Cambodia's Supreme Court on May 7 rejected a plea for bail by detained opposition leader Kem Sokha, following his arrest last year on charges of seeking to overthrow the government.

Hanoi (VNA) - Cambodia's Supreme Court on May 7rejected a plea for bail by detained opposition leader Kem Sokha, following hisarrest last year on charges of seeking to overthrow the government.

The plea was made by his lawyer Pheng Heng.

Earlieron March 27, Cambodia’s Appeal Court agreed with a trial’s ruling on extendingdetention of Sokha, former head of the now dissolved Cambodia National RescueParty (CNRP), by additional six months.

Sokha,64, was arrested on September 3, 2017 and detained from September 6, 2017 oncharges of conspiring with a foreign power in accordance with Article 443 ofCambodia’s Criminal Code.

Lastmid-November, the CNRP was dissolved by the Supreme Court and 118 senior partymembers were banned from joining politics for five years.-VNA
