Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s newly-elected National Assembly held its first meetingunder the chair of King Norodom Sihamoni in Phom Penh on September 5, earlierthan the mandatory 60 days after the general election.
The meeting was attendedby 125 parliamentarians of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) that won allNational Assembly seats in the sixth general election on July 29.
Addressing the meeting,King Norodom Sihamoni called for the new law-makers’ loyalty and devotion for thepeople.
After the King leftthe National Assembly for the Royal Palace, the National Assembly meeting waspresided over by Samdech Heng Samrim, the oldest parliamentarian and Chairmanof the fifth National Assembly and Honourary President of the CPP.
Law-makers approvedthe list of the new parliamentarians and the operational regulations of the newparliament.
VietnameseAmbassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh and diplomatic delegations, includingambassadors of ASEAN countries, attended the session, along with ambassadorsfrom the US and the European Union.
All thelawmakers-elect are expected to take an oath of allegiance at the Royal Palaceon the afternoon of the same day.
On September 6, theNational Assembly is due to vote for its leadership and then give a vote ofconfidence to the new government.
Earlier on August 17,the Cambodian King signed a Royal order to appoint Samdech Hun Sen as the PrimeMinister for the 2018-2023 tenure.-VN
